Dil le gayi thali Gujrat di

It’s been more than 16 hours since I had my meal at Rajdhani and I’m yet to get over it. Having got soooo used to the regular butter nan, tandoori roti, paneer butter masala, malai kofta and the likes, which virtually every Indian restaurant in the city offers, Encore Hotels’ flagship brand Rajdhani was a welcome and much needed change. Well, to begin with, this is not a run of the mill restaurant that you’ll find at every nook and corner. Rajdhani is a pure vegetarian restaurant that offers only Gujrati thali. So, that basically means no menu cards and needless to say, no A la Carte. Their philosophy is simple - come, sit, eat what we give you and you’ll come back for more. Come to think of it, it’s a little bit like home. They started off by offering us Masala Khichiya papad and some dahi vada as starters and before we knew it the main course had arrived. It comprised of a plethora of dishes. Don’t as me what they were. They were all traditional Gujrati dishes and they all had names that sounded greek and latin to me. All I know is that they tasted great and most of them had a tinge of sweetness in them. For the benefit of those who are unaware of this fact, let me clarify-that is one characteristic feature of Gujrati cuisine. In all, there were around 25-30 items, the phulkas, parathas, side dishes and chutneys included. All this for just Rs.125 per thali. In 20 mins the entire meal was over. That’s probably how much time most restaurants take to serve the starters. Was it because we were devouring the food so fast or was it the ultra fast service? Your guess is as good as mine. All items other than the desert have unlimited refills. Speaking of the desert, perhaps the only item which was a bit of a let down was the Shrikhand which formed the desert. It was ridiculously sweet. Other than this minor flaw and the ambience, which I thought was quite ordinary, Rajdhani exceeded expectations and turned out to be an extraordinary experience. The restaurant has numerous outlets across the country and also one in Dubai. It boasts of 72 different menus, comprising of 26 items, which keep changing every month. So, if you are a fan of Gujrati food, Rajdhani will feel like heaven, if you’ve never tasted Gujrati food, please check this place out, it’s quite an experience and if you have tried this cuisine in the past and been a touch disappointed, I strongly recommend you give this restaurant a shot, you might just change your mind.
