Take a trip back in time!!!

Situated on the top floor of the Citi Centre Mall, BJN group’s Sahib Sindh Sultan is another one of those theme restaurants that are becoming all so popular these days. The setting in this case is an old pre-independence train with the waiters all dressed up as railway personnel! How cool is that! The restaurant screams opulence and is reminiscent of the famous “Palace on Wheels”. Everything from the ambience to the food, not to mention the service, is top class. The non-alcoholic speciality beverages and the Dal Makhani deserve a special mention. The regular paneer dishes and kebabs are also quite good. If you are one of those who need a peg or two before or after a grand meal then fear not, they also serve alcohol. Needless to say, the place is quite expensive and if you or not in one of those generous moods, you might want to re-consider visiting it. This restaurant is a little bit of a favourite among many foodies and it is advisable to make reservations before you head out for a nice meal especially on weekends. Just a gentle word of caution; the place in itself seemed really quite the evening I visited it. Perhaps because of the overwhelming experience the decibel levels of the guests were quite low. So, if you are planning to visit it as a group with lots of daaru shaaru and hulla gulla in mind, you might want to consider other options. This is a really classy restaurant, an ideal place for, maybe, a first date!!!

Aboard a Vintage train

Sahib Sindh Sultan is situated in the top floor of City Centre Mall in Banjara Hills Hyderabad. I visited it along with my family on 14th August evening.

I had heard that usually in this restaurant, you have to wait for a long time to get a table. I had called the restaurant in the afternoon and was told they do not take any reservation. I was told that if I land up latest by 8:30 PM, I should get a table without much wait.

We reached by 8 PM. As we entered we were in a station platform. There was a full length mirror on one side of the platform which gave it a much longer look. The platform had tables for seating and lo next to it was a train compartment. We took a table inside the compartment. Since it is a theme restaurant, it is important that you look around to bask in the ambience. In the compartment the overhead racks had old suitcases and British hats. The waiters and stewards were dressed as railway personnel. Outside from the platform if you peek above the train you can see stars as in a real station. The platform has an old telephone and a old railway map to add to the ambience.

The menu book makes interesting reading. It gives the introduction to the oldest train in Asia with 3 engines named Sahib, Sindh and Sultan. The menu is comprehensive with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes with names like the Kanpur Tomato Shorba and Chicken Dak Bungalow.

We ordered Mishkin Paya Shorba, a mutton paya soup. It was thick, creamy and extremely tasty. Main course were Shikampuri (Mutton) Kababs (made of minced mutton). Being Bengalis we just could not resist the Fish Tikka A La Lord Rippon. Finally we had Rajputana Lal Maans (Mutton Gravy – spicy, hot and delicious) with an assortment of Parathas. The food was served on a silver tray in line with the overall décor.

The service was quite fast, though in a place like this you do not mind it to be slightly slow so that you can sink in the ambience. My only request to this place is that they should accept advance reservations. Prices are not too expensive, the bill for three adults was around Rs 1200.

As we were taking our leave we made up our mind to revisit soon to try out some more of the different dishes.

An experience in dining

Amazing ambience, good service and authentic food which in my opinion is reasonably priced. What else can ask from a great restaurant? Sahib Sind Sultan is an experience in dining.

The Sikhampuri kabab is divine. Kakori kabab is as mouth watering as it's history mentions.

Try the fiery Rajputana maans and u would be able to appreciate the history of the bravest warriors of India.

Very different from the usual Hyderabdi Biryani the Parathwali Biryani is an experience in itself.

The stuffed parathans are amazing (special mention is the Lal Mirchi Parantha (How was it - fiery).

But the Pièce de résistance has to be the Shorba in the beginning. The paaya Shorba and the Vulcan Foundry Shorba are to die for. Jhinga pulao is a recommendation.

The cocktails are not exhaustive but they can do with some more varieties and names.

Another feather in the BJN cap.

Having spent decades in Bangalore, the BJN group of hotels has become a trustworthy name for me. With an entire floor of my favorite BJN hotels in City centre mall, I was overjoyed!

Sahib Sindh Sultan also, keeps up to the traditional high quality expectations in BJN style. Terrific interiors, good / authentic food and satisfactory service invites me to this restaurant over and over again. I must agree with my foodie buddy that their Karara Palak chaat is a must-have! Loved most of the other vegetarian dishes there as well. I expect no less from their non-vegetarian menu as well, though thats to be explored as yet.

But, whatever happened to the concept of reservations??!?! Much as I adore this place, I will NOT wait for over an hour to be seated, when there is a tried and tested concept of reserving a table! Reservations work and work well when treated with responsibility. The only thing disappointing with these Hyderabad branches is the decision to abandon reserving tables. I hope someone is listening!

Good food Great Ambience

Sahib Sindh Sultan never fails... The entire ambience they have created of a train in pre-independence times with the costumes the waiters wear are quite interesting. The food is amazing too.

You might have to book in advance to get a seat at this place. I saw people waiting outside for a seat till almost closing time. Not surprising considering the quality of food.

The drinks might need a special sniffer to test the alcohol content though... Probably cos they dint want people getting smashed up and ignoring their yummy food. Good North Indian Food and good variety too...
Try the fish biryani. Slightly different from other fish biryani's I've had but a good one nevertheless

what surprised me most was the prices. I'd expected it to be a lot more expensive.
Dinner for two including drinks came to 1200. Good deal I must say.

Enjoy the experience!
